In Weeks 1 – 4 of the Spring season, at least two Cosmos have made the NASL Team of the Week (ToTW) each week. Week 5 would prove to be the same, but with one key difference: two new faces make their first appearance.
The only professional soccer club in New York, the New York Cosmos, currently sits on top of the league table for the NASL, leading the field by three points, unbeaten after five games. For the second week in a row, they will play host to a Canadian visitor as FC Edmonton seeks to keep their five-game unbeaten streak (in all competitions) alive.
On Saturday night, in iconic Coney Island, the Cosmos extended their unbeaten streak to five games as they beat the Ottawa Fury 1 – 0 to remain on top of the table. There was no better place to do it than under the Parachute Jump, lit up green and white, with the waves of the ocean crashing on the beach just behind MCU Park. Not that anyone could hear the waves over the sound of the Five Points.
42 years ago today, the New York Cosmos signed Bronx New York native Shep Messing to be the goalkeeper of the Cosmos. Today, although he no longer wears the jersey, he still carries the club in his heart as he is a fan favorite and club ambassador.
To the Cosmos, of course he was one of their legends. One of the greats for whom the New York Cosmos built their storied franchise around. Giorgio was a confident player and had the stats to prove it. From 1976-83 he made 213 appearances for the Cosmos and netted 193 goals. In 1980, he actually netted 50 goals in one season.
